In your room, where time stands still, or moves at your will
Will you let the morning come soon? Or will you leave me lying here?
In your favorite darkness, your favorite half-light, your favorite consciousness
-DEPECHE MODE, "In Your Room," 1993

YOU DON'T LIVE THERE ANYMORE
The first intercut image in the short video Disappear Here presents a sheet cake, as from a child's birthday party, showing the sentence "The recollection is a cascade of spatial metaphors" in frosting. (The phrase neatly summarizes a conceptual thread tying together all of de Beer's work.) A teenage girl enters her bedroom. She is wearing a Girl Scout uniform that seems at first sweet, then - as she gets ready for something before the mirror - confining, too small. The props of her transformation include a cigarette and studded leather bracelets, anachronistic accessories that imply the multiple roles she is playing, outgrowing some but not yet comfortable in the next.
